Roberto Burle Marx
had a close relationship to music from his childhood.
In his youth, Burle Marx had
thought of becoming a professional singer and his
brother Walter was a
renowned musician, creator of the Rio symphony.

He also used art and music as an inspiration to his landscape works. He compares the plants to musical notes.
There are obvious musical qualities in his garden designs, both in their often flowing lines and in their harmony of color and form.

The images are a selection from experimental musical scores that were used in the same period from musicians and could have an influence on Burle Marx’s drawings.![]()

Roberto Burle Marx had a specific set of principles he used to complete his designs which included analogy, contrast, repetition, isolation, expansion-reduction and rhythm.
Most of these graphic scores don't have the meaning of playing the exact music that the composer was thinking of, but it's an interpretation of the music given only some principles.
